A few pondering thoughts

So we did our third race in as many weekend this morning. A long time college friend suggested we join him at the Epsom Old Home Day 4 miler. I knew the course and figured the Savage family would have no problem with it.

It's an up and down out and back along Black Hall Road. The course is not very memorable and there was no one out cheering on runners as we went by their houses. So different from the York Days 5k and the Pittsfield Rotary Balloon Rally 5k. It was a bit depressing! When we showed up this morning, I was quick to realize that John and I were just about the only people there not involved in a running club. We make up our own running club, Team Jake. Standing in line for the port-a-potties, the woman with the fancy mullet (no joke, it was a curly mullet to boot) says..."Wow this race is out in the middle of no where!" I had all I could do to bite my tongue and not comment on her hairstyle. Epsom is definitely not in the middle of no where...they have a traffic circle, a McDonalds, DD, and not to mention my place of employment. Clearly Epsom is a hubbub of activity and a hotbed of activity compared to my quiet little town. Overall we were not so impressed the 4 miler. John commented on the way home that is just didn't have that small town feel.

Now Pittsfield...that is a great little race. It's the best kept secret of the Balloon Rally weekend. We see the same runners year after year and it's very friendly. Nick puts on a great event and hopefully it will continue to get bigger as the years go on. The awards are a lot of fun and Nick comes up with a ton of raffle prizes (really it's like a yard sale for runners).

So next up on the docket is the Saunders 10k. It's a great course along the seacoast and it kicks off in the evening. Really I like nothing better than an evening run. I did my long run this past Friday pushing the stroller. Grayson will not be making the journey with us this year since it's school night. He gets to stay home with his grandparents.

Then finally we round out August with the Barnstead Firefighters Association 5k. It's my favorite small town race. A great course for a PR, the proceeds go to a great cause and we brought back awards for the age groups this year. Just hoping the weather gods watch out for us and deliver!
